Responsible Gambling

Responsible Gambling (RG) is a core value of the CT Lottery. We work with various stakeholders to address problem and underage gambling by taking proactive measures to implement and support responsible gaming initiatives.

We develop our products specifically for adults (must be 18+ to play and 21 or older to sports wager);

We strive to educate the public about making healthy choices when it comes to gambling through responsible gambling campaigns; and,

We educate the public about the Problem Gambling Helpline (and chat) so that if a player, or a loved one, needs help they can directly be connected to professional support.

In order to best implement our RG efforts, CT Lottery:

Participates in the North American Association of State and Provincial Lotteries (NASPL) - National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG) RG standards verification program and the World Lottery Association (WLA) Responsible Gambling Verification program.

Supports the CT Council on Problem Gambling (CCPG) and the CT Department of Mental and Addiction Services (DMHAS) – Problem Gambling Services.

Has been certified by NASPL - NCPG at its highest certification, the Sustaining Level, making CT Lottery one of only a few lotteries in North America to reach this achievement.

CLC Employee Training

Employee Responsible Gambling training is mandatory for new employees, and is provided annually to all employees. This training includes identifying signs of problematic play as well as what to do when concerns are identified or a patron requests assistance. Retailers are provided with materials to help guide individuals in need to appropriate support resources.

Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM)

The CT Lottery proudly supports and participates in Problem Gambling Awareness Month (PGAM) every March. This effort is designed to raise awareness about problem gambling and help foster discussions about identification, prevention, treatment and recovery. Throughout March, the CT Lottery’s support of PGAM includes a variety of marketing and promotional initiatives to increase awareness.

Holiday Campaign

Each year, CT Lottery hosts a “Give a Child a Toy, Not a Ticket" Holiday Toy Drive to help raise awareness that lottery tickets are not suitable gifts for children, and to collect toys for patients at Yale New Haven Hospital(YNHH), as well as emergency departments and pediatric specialty centers. Over the years, the CT Lottery has coordinated the donation of over 30,000 toys to programs such as this.

Wise Winnings

Additionally, the CT Lottery and Credit Unions Building Financial Independence (“CUBFI”), a 501(c)3 charitable non-profit organization helping people build and maintain financial independence, have teamed up to offer a financial literacy and education campaign for lottery winners known as Wise Winnings. This joint effort is the first-of-its-kind in the country and offers no-cost financial advice from not-for-profit credit union financial counselors to CT Lottery prize winners, along with helpful tips on making a plan for a sudden windfall.

Wise Winnings is part of CT Lottery's larger Responsible Gambling efforts, which include educational campaigns and materials on how to gamble safely, monetary and in-kind contributions towards problem gambling programs and services, retailer and employee trainings, and more.
